Trying to repair plumbing issues without the help of a professional can lead to worse problems than you originally started with. Properly repairing plumbing takes a great deal of training and knowledge, which is why most leaks, burst pipes, and clogs should be left to the professionals.
There are tons of ways that do-it-yourself plumbing can go wrong, as demonstrated in this video. These situations, though entertaining to watch, will cost these homeowners much more money than they saved by temporarily fixing the problems themselves.
If you feel inclined to fix your plumbing problems with some makeshift solutions, then think twice! Call the professionals at Done-Right! Rooter and Plumbing. You can reach us at (888) 379-0166, seven days a week. We service the greater San Jose area.
When facing burst water pipes or other plumbing emergencies, calling an emergency plumber is always the best option. Before the plumber arrives, knowing how to mitigate the worst damage and temporarily address the problem can help you prevent severe damage to your home.
Turn off water to the entire home: When there’s a major leak, there’s not always time to call a plumber before major damage is done. The whole-house water shutoff valve is located in one of two spots: on the water heater or in the water meter box in the yard. If the shutoff valve is in the yard, then you may need a water meter key. It’s recommended to keep this water meter key in a closet by the front door in case of an emergency; if you do not already know the location of the main water valve, locate it before an emergency arises.
Stop your toilet from running: Toilets that tend to run should eventually be inspected by a professional plumber. In the meantime, you can temporarily fix your running toilet. First, simply jiggle the handle; if the toilet stops running, then you may only need to move the tank’s arm to a lower link on the chain. The float may also have become disconnected. Adjust the float so it sits just above the water level in the tank.
Temporarily block a leak until a plumber arrives: Plumber’s tape is an excellent tool to keep around the house. It only sticks to itself, so you don’t have to worry about the adhesive wearing out when you have it wrapped around a pipe. If the piping underneath your sink has sprung a leak, then you can wrap plumber’s tape around it to create a completely watertight seal. This solution can actually last for a couple of weeks but is definitely a temporary fix; call your plumber right away if you have a leak.

We get a lot of calls from people that have water heaters, that are only a few years old, and the water heater is leaking from the bottom. Usually, the reason that these water heaters are leaking is that most of the customers have a water softener, which is used to remove hard water.
1. When sodium is added to the water (such as when a water softener is used), anode rods can corrode more quickly. Water softeners can help reduce sediment, but anodes can corrode in as little as six months if the water is over-softened.
2. Waiting too long to inspect and replace an anode rod is not a good idea. The possibility of the old water heater anode rod becoming broken off, and then falling to the bottom of the water heater (and then bouncing around whenever water travels inside the water heater) is what will deteriorate the water heater tank lining very quickly. This will cause cracks in the glass lining of the water heater radically shortening the life of the water heater. Having a depleted anode rod and not replacing your water heater anode rods in a timely fashion WILL shorten the life span of your water heater.

Every homeowner relies on hot water for showering, washing dishes, doing laundry, and cooking each day. This demand for hot water often leads to large monthly utility bills, especially if you own a traditional water heater. Consider the following overview of the environmental and financial benefits of tankless water heaters and ask your plumber about installation.
Improve Energy Efficiency
Up to 30% of your home’s energy costs go to heating water. A traditional water heater works constantly to fill its huge storage tank—up to 80 gallons large—with hot water and maintain its temperature. Energy-efficient tankless water heaters only heat water on demand, so no energy is wasted by heating water you do not need. Additionally, when you install a tankless water heater, you may be eligible for an energy efficiency tax credit and other government incentives. Improved energy efficiency means greater savings for the homeowner.
Maintain Ideal Temperatures
Traditional water heaters overheat the water to ensure a consistent temperature. These high temperatures can be dangerous to children and the elderly, who are the most susceptible to scalding. With tankless water heaters, there’s no need to overheat the water because it’s heated as you use it. This greatly reduces the risk of burning yourself due to overheated water.
Eliminate Downtime
If you have a large family or tend to use a lot of hot water at once, then you’re familiar with having to wait for your storage tank water heater to refill itself. But when you opt for a tankless water heater, you will no longer have to wait for hot water; all the water you need is heated right before you use it. Also, traditional water heaters are more susceptible to corrosion and water leaks and often require frequent repair.
