With the new “Ultra-Low Nox” water heaters, plumbers are getting calls from their customers saying the water heater keeps going out. A lot of times it’s the flue. Here is what we do. After we install a water heater, we hold a lighted match about one inch away where the flue ties into the water heater. If the flame of the match pulls towards the flue this mean the water heater has good draft. If it doesn’t pull, the water heater doesn’t have good draft and the water heater is not going to stay lit.
Here’s what must be done:
1. The flue is not sloped enough. Remember the previous water heater had a lot of exhaust (emission) flowing. However with less emission on the newer water heaters, if the flue is not sloped very well, the water heater is going to overheat and shut down
2. The flue is connected to the house furnace flue before it goes through the roof, and the house furnace has a blower in it. The exhaust of the house furnace is strong and pushes the water heater’s exhaust back, and the water heater shuts down
3. The water heater’s flue is metal. However, before the flue goes through the roof, the metal flue ties into oval asbestos flue. The metal flue and the asbestos flue carry different heat characteristics, and the low exhaust from the water heater won’t flow when the metal flue ties into the asbestos flue. The solution is to remove the asbestos flue. Run the metal flue from the water heater to and through the roof. This will make the whole flue metal.
